This book is called Captain Underpants and the Invasion of the Incredibly Naughty Cafeteria Ladies from Outer Space

·         I will introduce the Book to the class
·         We will discuss what we think will happen in the book before reading
·         I will do a picture walk while students are at the carpet

Vocabulary Focus:
Students will be handed a worksheet with selected vocabulary from the text to practice. Students will also highlight action words throughout the text

            Comprehension non-fiction

I will read the book “Captain Underpants” to the class. We will stop after every page a look for descriptive words and constantan blends.

Fluency and phrasing
We will have a fluency activity where students will hold up their white boards and stand in order with the sentence written making fluency visual.

I will have a checklist for the students to show rate, expression, accuracy, and expression.

Word decoding

“What is that word? Sound it out”
“What does the first part make? And the second part? Put those two together, what word is that?”




After Reading (describe how you will teach/re-enforce these skills within the text you’ve selected)

            Writing Activity





"Who can tell me something new they learned today from the book?"
"Where did you know how to find the meaning of that word?"
“What do you think was the theme of the book?”
“Why do you think that’s what the author was trying to tell us?”
  • Review consonant blends
  • Review word decoding
  • I will have each student pick a page from the text to write about
  • Students will write a few sentences about the page they chose and what they learned from the story
